Typically, in the United States, where medical marijuana is legal, the dispensaries source their drugs from local marijuana growers’ backyards. They would then distribute marijuana to their patients with prescriptions. On the other hand, Oakland, California City Council wants to take it one step further when it comes to marijuana production as they want to have control to approve the industrial marijuana-producing companies to be constructed and operate within the city.
This approval makes Oakland the first city in California to approve on the construction of facilities. In addition, the nearby city, Berkeley, also voted about this topic in November, as reported by Los Angeles Times.
To some, this new ordinance could make sense to a state that allows usage of medical marijuana but not everyone agrees. The local marijuana growers argued that this could destroy their business. Furthermore, Oakland City’s attorney is concerned about the legality of the dispensaries, even though it is under the state law and they could be raided by federal agents once they go on operation.
